National Medical Science Liaison, Specialty

Summary of Purpose:
To provide fair balanced, objective, scientific information, and education about OCPI Nephrology related rare diseases product(s) as well as gather medical intelligence through peer-to-peer interactions with opinion leaders, investigators, and other healthcare providers to better patient outcomes. To support the head office core brand team and selected brand-related medical initiatives.



  • Ensure appropriate dissemination of clinical information, knowledge, and services in a timely, ethical, and customer-focused manner
  • Establish status as a knowledgeable and trustworthy medical and scientific resource for opinion leaders with expertise and knowledge of supported product(s), treatment trends, clinical trials, and scientific research
  • Keep abreast of the current literature, new and emerging research interests, trends, therapeutic issues, and competitive landscape related to the relevant disease areas of focus
  • Communicate current and emerging clinical research data to opinion leaders in response to unsolicited inquiries. Communicate Otsuka’s long-term project and product goals
  • Identify medical experts to provide services as speakers, consultants, and investigators
  • Participate and interact with opinion leaders, including preparing moderators at national, regional, and local conferences, advisory boards, and other approved gatherings
  • Deliver scientifically focused balanced and objective educational presentations to groups of strategic importance such as hospital and payer committees
  • Train speakers for promotional programs on product knowledge, clinical/scientific data and information consistent with established company policies and compliance guidelines
  • Works closely with other personnel to meet the information needs from healthcare professionals
  • Identifies clinical investigators with research proposals that are consistent with our product development strategies and facilitates the Investigator-Initiated Study (IIS) process, as appropriate
  • Gather scientific and competitive intelligence as well as customer insight during interactions with opinion leaders or attendance of congresses and communicate to relevant Medical
  • Affairs and Clinical Development personal
  • Evaluate and assess potential investigational sites for participation in Otsuka-sponsored clinical studies as well as educate investigators about the study drug and pharmacovigilance procedures
  • Serve as local medical resource for field colleague training. Serve as a role model for field activities for other team members, and may serve as an on-boarding and/or therapeutic training partner
  • Works with Sales, Marketing, Market Access on creating programs and policies that meet business objectives and create competitive advantage
  • Reporting Safety Information, Product Quality Complaint and Customer Feedback as per training on current procedures


Qualifications and Key Competencies:

  • MD, PharmD, or PhD with a minimum of 5 years’ experience as field based Medical Science Liaison
  • Thorough knowledge of clinical medicine, disease management, and medical research
  • Proven competence against therapeutic knowledge, influencing skills, technology skills, business, and market knowledge
  • Proven track record of success, especially in the area of opinion leader engagement and experience working with academic centers of excellence
  • Must be able to organize, prioritize, and work effectively, independently and in groups in a collegial manner, including cross functional teams and internal/external networking, in a constantly changing environment
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills (including ability to network), strong personal integrity, teamwork abilities, (including the ability to serve as a role model for activities) and a customer focus are necessary
  • Must possess a sound knowledge of the Canadian Healthcare System, health technology assessment / market access and of the research procedures as well as the ICH guidelines, GCP and other ethical guidelines relevant to the pharmaceutical industry
  • Demonstrated ability to comprehend complex scientific data and concepts and communicate effectively to a variety of audiences
  • Strong business acumen, including technology skills, business, and market knowledge
  • Demonstrated organizational and analytical skills to set priorities, monitor progress towards goals, and track data, information, and activities.
  • Advanced French and English language proficiency (oral and written)
  • Willingness to travel (40% travel time) national and international
